Which leather do you buy?
"Real leather" stands on almost every sofa. But the difference between the leather types determines what a used sofa looks like after ten years – and what you should pay for it.
Aniline leather
Uncovered, only coloured. Feels warm and open-pored, but absorbs liquid. Used you recognize it on the patina: darker seats, visible grain. This is not a harm, but the reason why aniline leather is expensive.
Semi-aniline leather
Slightly pigmented outer layer, thereby significantly less sensitive, but still soft. For most households, the best compromise and the most common type of leather on designer sofas.
Pigmented leather
Closed layer of paint. The most robust and easy to maintain. Eighth used on abraded corners and armrests – there the cover layer can only be re-colored, not retrieved.
Nubu leather
Sanded surface, velvety and beautiful, but sensitive to water. Usually used with different stroke directions on the seat surface.
Buffalo leather
Thicker, coarser grained, very hard-wearing. The leather for households with children and animals – often needs the safest purchase.
How to Recognize a Good Occasion Leather Sofa
- Check the back and sides. Some sofas have real leather only where you sit. We write for each model what is installed.
- Press on the seams. Cracked seams are repairable, torn out seam holes are not.
- lift the seat cushion. Foam that does not recover the mold is wear.
- Listen to the frame. A solid wood or metal frame won’t creak when you drop into it.
